Care guide

Your pattern, in plain words

Most heads have more than one pattern. Start with the one that gives you the most trouble.

Long loose waves seen from behind against a white wall

Waves

Waves lie flat at the root and bend through the lengths and ends. They like light products and a gentle hand.

  • Wash with a light shampoo and put conditioner from mid-length down.

  • Scrunch while your hair is wet, then leave it alone until it is dry.

  • Refresh with water from a spray bottle instead of brushing dry.

  • Cut so the bends fall where you want them.

Curls

Curls spring from the root in loose or tight S shapes. They want more water than you might think, and they like to be left alone.

  • Detangle with conditioner in your hair, in sections.

  • Rake in your styler and scrunch upward.

  • Diffuse on a low setting, then wait until fully dry before you touch.

  • Trim often enough to keep the shape you chose.

Coils

Coils form tight spirals or zigzags and shrink a lot as they dry. They like moisture, time and wide-tooth tools.

  • Work in small sections, and detangle from the ends up.

  • Keep moisture in with a leave-in and a sealing step.

  • Stretch with twists, braids or a blow dryer on low heat if you want length.

  • Cover your hair at night with satin.

Carmina T.Know your pattern class

“Jalissa never rushed my detangling. She talked me through every section so I could do it myself at home.”

Questions

What people ask first

Do I need a consultation?

Yes, for a first visit. We look at your hair dry, talk through your pattern and goals, and agree a plan and a time estimate before we cut or style. Color on curls always starts with one.

Do you cut hair dry?

Dry is how we start. Curls spring up when they dry, so we cut them in the shape they will wear. We wash and finish afterward.

I'm not sure of my pattern. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Finding it is what the first visit and the Know your pattern class are for. Most heads have more than one pattern.

How big are the classes?

Six seats at most, so a stylist can reach every head. You work on your own hair.

What do I bring to my visit?

Photos of cuts you like, the products you use now, and a note of what has been on your hair. Come with your hair dry and without product if you can.

How much will it cost?

It depends on your hair and your stylist. The booking page shows the studio's prices before you choose a time, and how pricing works explains what sets them.
